With about ten minutes of daylight remaining this White Faced Heron was desperately stalking the shallows at Ricketts Point hoping for a catch. Twice it appeared to snaffle something, both times a very small fish probably. Then with the light almost gone it flew away across the bay leaving a few squarking Seagulls to settle down.
Lovely Photographs, I hope the heron wasn’t too hungry.

Thanks Cathy, one never knows with these birds, it was catching something but hard to see what.

Beautiful images and haiku Denis, I hope the heron found some food elsewhere 😉

Thanks Xenia. In suburban areas near water they often fly into yards and feed on goldfish and frogs in ponds.

For some reason this reminded me of the locals fishing for minnows and lobsters in the tidal pools where we stayed in Kauai. They also used flashlights when it got too dark. I do like the words “wishful fishing”. Never a guarantee of success.

With any fishing birds there ins a lot of wishful fishing, also with people rod fishing I think Olga as you rarely see anything caught.

What a wistful observation. I believe that the heron shall be amply rewarded for its tenacity.

The photos are exquisite and in your haiku you highlight the herons absorption well with a fun play of words in the first 🙂

It is Janice and they don’t mess around . When you see a Heron in the water you know there are potential photos coming up.
